After an intensive period of design research at the studio, METU MUD 2016-17, visited Kiev and Lviv in Ukraine in 4-13 July 2017. Within the field trip sponsored by MESA Holding, the studio group had an opportunity to experience the very particular urban condition of Ukraine which is in a rapid spatial transformation under capitalist restructuring. In addition to the legacy of Soviet urbanism, the emerging forms of the new era (under an intensive real-estate development) and the contrasting image of the traditional Ukrainian architecture were all observed and discussed during the field studies. The 10-hour long trip between Kiev and Lviv has been especially an incredible experience for the group to realise an unprecedented scale of regional formation and its extensive infrastructural basis in Asian context.
